I think by now most people have seen that picture of Kim Kardashian having a Vampire Facial. You know the one, she has blood smeared all over her face. Looks nasty right? Well, that’s not really how a Vampire Facelift looks. When the procedure is done properly, the only thing applied topically to your face is platelet-rich plasma (PRP) which is nearly clear. You will not have blood all over your face, so don’t worry!
What is the Vampire Facial? The bare bones explanation of a Vampire Facial is a micropen treatment with PRP. Sounds ho hum? Not so much! This treatment, so popular with Hollywood celebrities that they have it performed on a routine basis, gives extraordinary results, and has seemingly revolutionized the world of anti-aging. Benefits, which are discussed in detail below, include:
- The growth factors from your own blood (the PRP) actually rebuild your own collagen
- Repairs fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, and stretch marks
- Increases vascularity, giving you glowing, smoother skin
- Increases collagen which leads to firmer, more supple skin
- Lasts up to two years
- Extremely low chance of rejection, as you are using products from your own body (rather than a procedure using filler)
Sounds pretty incredible right? Well it is! And last week we had a training on the Vampire Facial (or PRP, as I will refer to it in the rest of this blog). Training isn’t actually quite the right word since our aestheticians have been doing Micropen for quite awhile now. But adding in the centrifuge equipment for the bloodwork aspect just required some basic set-up knowledge. As I thought this was all that was going to be done, I neglected to set-up a model for this “training.” So about fifteen minutes into the training, Leslie came into my office and asked, “You wanna be a model? You’re gonna have your blood drawn…”
Sure! YES is always my answer. 1. I’m not gonna turn down a free treatment, 2. I was the one who should have scheduled a model!, and 3. Boom! There’s my blog topic;).
So into Gina’s room I went and she applied numbing cream to my face. Gina, who is a nurse, drew my blood (it’s about 10ml that is needed). I gotta say, of all the times I’ve had my blood drawn, Gina was one of the best! No messing around, quick and virtually painless, and no bruise.
After the blood is drawn, it is placed in the centrifuge for 10 minutes to separate the platelet-rich plasma that will be used for the treatment. After it’s done, the PRP is drawn into a separate syringe. Gina then cleaned off my numbing cream and began dripping the PRP onto my forehead using a syringe with a blunt tip cannula (just for precision..not for injection). And then she began the micropen treatment. The only technical aspect that is different from a regular micropen treatment is that PRP is used as the “product” rather than hyaluronic acid. The benefits of this? Incomparable.
Let’s break it down:
With Micropen with PRP you will be getting an exponentially higher amount of growth factors, derived from your own platelets, than with any product, even products that include growth factors. These high amounts of growth factors promote increased collagen production. Why would you want to increase collagen production? To look gorgeous of course! But here’s a short medical explanation too:
Collagen makes up 75 percent of our skin; thus, the smooth, plump appearance of young, healthy skin is due in a large part to the presence of healthy collagen levels. The breakdown of healthy collagen and the decline in collagen production over time leads to the development of unwanted wrinkles and the appearance of aged skin. Because of this, we are always searching for new ways to boost collagen levels and repair past collagen damage.
PRP does what fillers and other skin care procedures just can’t: it rebuilds your own collagen using your own growth factors. It actually reverses the aging process by creating more collagen, and repairing the skin.
Other benefits of this amazing procedure? There is virtually no chance of rejection, as no foreign substance is being injected into the body (as with fillers): your body doesn’t reject itself. The results can also last up to two years with this procedure, longer than almost all dermal fillers. It also treats the entire face, instead of just specific areas, like with filler injections.
You will see results with one treatment: the skin will look more plump and hydrated. The PRP also increases vascularity so you will see a healthy glow (I had my procedure almost a week ago and this is the biggest thing I’m noticing right now: like I just came from yoga, but all the time! Very youthful!
For anti-aging purposes though, and to really repair years of collagen breakdown, sun damage, wrinkles, acne scars, surgical scars or stretch marks, you will need at least three treatments. But you will NOT be disappointed with the results. Our staff was hooked on regular micropen treatments, but the Vampire Facelift is a whole new level in the anti-aging world, and we’ve found our new addiction! Give us some of your blood and we will give you back your youth!
