Take This Mineral To Lower Your Risk Of Dementia

Body Tonic Medical Spa Take This Mineral To Lower Your Risk Of Dementia in Austin, TX

Ever since my DNA test revealed my markers for dementia, I’m always searching for ways to safeguard my brain health. Did you know that a simple mineral like magnesium could help reduce the risk? Cases of dementia and other neurodegenerative diseases are increasing. In fact, the number of people diagnosed with dementia is expected to double by 2050 compared to 2019. While there are no cures for these conditions, there are preventive measures we can take to enhance our brain health and potentially lower our risk of developing them later in life.

A recent study examined the dietary magnesium intake of over 6,000 cognitively healthy individuals. It compared the brain age of those consuming around 350 milligrams/day with those consuming over 550 milligrams/day. The researchers discovered that those consuming over 550 mg of magnesium daily had a brain age approximately one year younger by the time they reached 55 compared to those consuming a normal amount of magnesium (about 350 milligrams/day). Based on these results, the researchers propose that a 41% increase in magnesium intake could lead to reduced age-related brain shrinkage. The best part? Reduced age-related brain shrinkage is linked with improved cognitive function and a lower risk of developing dementia later in life. Pretty exciting, right? If you’re interested in neuroprotective benefits, ensure you’re getting enough magnesium in your diet—load up on dark leafy greens, nuts, seeds, and even some dark chocolate, or consider a Mg glycinate supplement. How exactly does the supplement help?

  • Neuroprotection: Magnesium has neuroprotective properties, meaning it may help protect neurons from damage and reduce inflammation in the brain, which are factors that can contribute to the development of dementia.

  • Regulation of neurotransmitters: Magnesium is involved in the regulation of neurotransmitters, such as dopamine and serotonin, which are important for mood and cognitive function. Imbalances in these neurotransmitters have been linked to dementia and other neurological disorders.

  • Anti-inflammatory effects: Magnesium has anti-inflammatory effects in the body, which may help reduce inflammation in the brain and protect against neurodegeneration.

  • Improved sleep: Magnesium plays a role in regulating the body’s sleep-wake cycle and may help improve sleep quality. Adequate sleep is important for brain health and may help lower the risk of dementia.
