DEXA body composition and bone density scanner at Body Tonic RX in Austin, TX

DEXA Scanbody composition & bone density, measured.

The medical gold standard for tracking body fat, lean muscle, visceral fat, and bone density — in a single 10-minute scan with same-day results at our boutique medical spa in Westlake Hills and Bee Cave.

What it is

Real numbers, not a guess on the bathroom scale.

A DEXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) scan uses a low-dose x-ray to distinguish fat, lean muscle, and bone — with precision a scale, smart-mirror, InBody, or bioimpedance device simply cannot match. It is the same technology hospitals, research labs, and pro athletes use to measure body composition.

At Body Tonic RX, we use DEXA to give our weight-loss, HRT, peptide, and longevity patients a clear baseline — and the only honest way to confirm that what you're losing is actually fat, and what you're gaining is actually muscle.

What you measure

One scan, a full picture.

Total body fat %

Whole-body fat mass as a percentage of total weight — the most reliable body fat measurement available.

Visceral fat (VAT)

Deep abdominal fat surrounding your organs — the strongest predictor of metabolic and cardiovascular risk.

Lean muscle mass

Skeletal muscle by region (arms, legs, trunk). Track gains on training, HRT, or peptide protocols.

Bone mineral density

T-score and Z-score for spine, hip, and whole body — gold-standard osteoporosis and osteopenia screening.

Regional symmetry

Left vs. right muscle balance — identify asymmetries that contribute to injury or imbalanced training.

RMR estimate

Resting metabolic rate estimated from lean mass — your true daily calorie baseline.

Who it's for

Built for patients who want to know, not guess.

Weight-loss patients

Confirm fat loss vs. muscle loss on GLP-1, semaglutide, or tirzepatide programs.

HRT & peptide patients

Document lean mass changes on testosterone, hormone optimization, or BPC-157 / Ipamorelin protocols.

Athletes & lifters

Quantify training response, side-to-side symmetry, and recovery progress.

Longevity & healthspan

Baseline visceral fat, sarcopenia risk, and bone density before they become problems.

Bone health screening

Osteoporosis and osteopenia detection for peri- and post-menopausal women, men over 50, and at-risk patients.

Post-injury recovery

Track muscle re-growth and regional balance after surgery or extended immobility.

Measure what you're actually changing.

A DEXA baseline before — and a follow-up scan 3–6 months into — your wellness program is the most honest way to confirm progress.

FAQ

Common questions.

What is a DEXA scan?

DEXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) is the medical gold standard for measuring body composition and bone density. A low-dose x-ray distinguishes fat mass, lean muscle mass, and bone mineral content with clinical precision — far more accurate than scales, calipers, or bioimpedance.

How long does a DEXA scan take?

The scan itself takes about 6–10 minutes. Plan on 20–30 minutes total including check-in, a brief intake, and a same-day results walkthrough with your provider.

Is a DEXA scan safe?

Yes. A whole-body DEXA scan uses extremely low-dose ionizing radiation — roughly equivalent to a few hours of normal background exposure and a small fraction of a single chest x-ray. It is not recommended during pregnancy.

How should I prepare for my scan?

Wear comfortable clothing free of metal (zippers, underwires, large buttons). Avoid calcium supplements for 24 hours before. Stay normally hydrated and avoid heavy meals immediately before the scan. Bring a list of current medications.

How often should I get a DEXA scan?

For body composition tracking on a weight-loss, HRT, or peptide protocol, every 3–6 months is typical. For bone density monitoring, most patients repeat every 1–2 years based on baseline T-score and clinical risk.

How much does a DEXA scan cost in Austin?

Single scans and discounted scan packages (ideal for tracking progress over time) are available at Body Tonic RX. Contact our team for current pricing and member savings.

Will my insurance cover a DEXA scan?

Most wellness and body composition scans are self-pay. Bone density (osteoporosis) screening may be covered by insurance when medically indicated — we are happy to provide a superbill you can submit to your carrier.
