Researchers reviewed 18 randomized controlled trials, involving over 11,000 adults with type 2 diabetes — a group already known to have a significantly higher baseline risk for Alzheimer’s and cognitive decline. The findings were striking:
Cognitive function was measured using standard tools like the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). Typically, a decline of 1–3 points per year is considered clinically meaningful — especially in older adults or those with metabolic disease.
But in this analysis, GLP-1 medications produced more than a 1-point improvement in cognitive scores in just about 24 weeks.

That’s reversing it.
The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) is another widely used test for memory and executive function. Clinical significance can vary depending on which threshold is used, but the meta-analysis showed GLP-1s cleared at least two major thresholds (1-point and 1.6-point improvements) — and possibly the important 2-point threshold.
Again, this all occurred in under half the time studies traditionally use to evaluate cognitive change.
